Grab the crayons.
It's time to get messy.
There’s a feeling of freedom that certain art mediums can offer which others can’t.
I spend a lot of time using ink pens for illustrations, the drawback of ink is once it’s on the page there is no going back, it’s a wonderful medium for detailed drawings, but for someone like me that likes a more rustic look to their work it a sod sometimes, one surprise sneeze or cat attack and the piece is pretty much ruined.
When not creating small sketches, my go-to medium is acrylic, quick to dry, and you can layer up and over any mistakes, even in a lighter colour.
I’ve also been trying watercolour, but again, this feels very delicate and thoughtful in its approach, something which I’m not, so I mainly use it for backgrounds, messy - but effective.
But there is one medium I love the most, pastels. I don’t use them often as the mess is impressive, the dust gets everywhere – but the freedom of movement and just letting go is why it’s such a unique tool, getting lost in the dust is freeing, like letting your inner child out to play, not to be perfect or worry about where the piece is going simply to enjoy putting something down on paper.
When I’m stressed, sad or stuck with my writing, just taking a moment for myself and creating something can be the reset needed (especially on a cold, wet day when a walk is less than desirable, and you need to clear your head and get away from the problems of the world). It’s fun to sit and make a mess, let the imagination go wild, and feel like a child again, even just for a moment.
So, when it’s all too much, maybe try it yourself - grab some pastels or crayons, chalk, colouring pencils, even a biro and just let go. Don’t overthink, enjoy making a mess, doodle without worry and create something magical that’s just for you.
Thanks for reading. I’m still finishing Book Two of the A’dara series, and having a rewrite of the ending is stressful, as I’ve added a bit more lore and want to nail it. So I thought I’d share my go-to outlet in winter, when I can’t get outside. Have a great week, everyone, keep well and safe out there.
And if you’ve not read Champion of A’dara Book One, this is the link to buy on Amazon. It’s free on KU. It’s also available as a paperback from Barnes and Noble and Blackwell’s. And worth checking if your library can order a copy too.

Very nice! I especially love the pastel fox.
